Windy Pandas socials are a very important part of the team and give us a opportunity for team bonding, fun and laughter. Activities in the past includes bowling, rounders, sports day, Go Ape, beach trips, picnics, snowboarding, karaoke etc. We also have a variety of chilled socials hosted at our members houses, in the park or even coffee.

We are more than just a Dragon Boating club!

First official @britishdragonboat race done for us. We might not have come away with any silverware but we did leave with solid foundations and a great sense of hope for the future. From Captain @robkwan9:

Really proud of you all for giving it your all, going up against the best teams in the UK and giving them a fight. Fantastic job from the ladies too having to compete in the women’s races. I'm shattered after just doing the mixed races, so all of you are heroines for doing an extra two races!

We know where we stand now as a team, and we can only go upwards from here. The only way to get better and improve is to come to training and work on the things that we need to as a team. I believe in us, and now it's down to you to step up to the challenge!

Great to be out for two boat training again. We also hit Beckton #parkrun again before training. Fun fact: with 7 Pandas running, we made up 11% of all the parkrunners at Beckton. Can we get more Pandas to go to the next scheduled parkrun in our diary on 24 June to make it an even bigger takeover?

If you can’t wait till then, sign up for the Hackney 5k this Saturday where a massive 16 Pandas are going to be representing. It’s going to be a great event!

We fulfilled our Earth Day pledge by doing a dock

We fulfilled our Earth Day pledge by doing a dock clean up a couple of weeks ago.
.
We spent a couple of hours after training clearing the area around the slipway and boat storage and ended up collecting so much we filled an entire wheelie bin.
.
There was everything from the usual plastic bottles, the tiniest pieces of polystyrene, and numerous cigarette butts, to dead birds, fox skulls and gathered leaves.
.
Whilst it was very productive, coming back the next week and seeing the waste that had accumulated again around the slipway, shows that there is much more to be done on a regular basis.
.
However, it was good to have done a small bit to help our immediate environment and Captain @robkwan9 treated us all to an ice cream from @weareprimecoffee as a reward. Cheers Cap!

Another Wednesday evening session couldn’t go ahead on the water due to high winds, but that just meant an opportunity for some land training and a technical theory session with Coach @kitk87.

Six Pandas woke up and made it to #becktonparkrun to complete a 5k run.
.
It’s a great start to the weekend and is perfect as a warm up to our paddling session. It doesn’t matter if you run it, walk it, or somewhere in between, just know that showing up consistently will yield results. .

Social at Clays Bar, Canary Wharf.

Not quite the same as the real thing, but good fun nonetheless. You get your own private booth and 90 minutes to play as many games as you like. You can order food and drink straight to your booth and there’s even space to charge your phone as well as store your belongings.
.
The individual games are a lot of fun but the team games were the best. Split yourselves up into two teams and it gets boisterous as you’re either jeering the other team or cheering your own.
.
We checked out @mktplce.uk which is just a few minutes away beforehand and was impressed by the variety of food and the relaxing social atmosphere.
.
Overall a fun evening out with the team!

⚠️ Deep Thoughts ⚠️

Today marks 8 years since I first paddled with the Windy Pandas. I feel blessed to have met such a great team and this post is dedicated to Pandas old, new and those that are yet to join!

I remember my first training session clearly; being warmly welcomed into the team; having to do a two minute plank (the longest two minutes of my life …); the aches and pains that came the following morning. After the first three sessions, I considered quitting as I struggled to paddle without stopping. But after persevering for another two sessions, I realised that I could keep going, if I put my mind to it.

It fills me with absolute joy to recall all the memories made with the Pandas, paddling through hailstones, at night, whilst eating a cucumber (or was it a banana?) on Panda Day. Although the pandas are notorious for partying, there are a few of us who enjoy a gentle weekend afternoon of solving puzzles (big shoutout to team FOMO 💛🕵🏻‍♀️🕵🏻).

Since joining the Windy Pandas, I have learnt so much about teamwork, friendship, family and love. The biggest takeaway for me is that there are no failures in life - only lessons to be learned. When one door closes, another one opens. And when things don’t go the way you plan, know that the universe still has exciting things in store for you!

I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has made Windy Pandas the great community that it is today (tissues at the ready …!). To the captains and coaches who inspire us to keep improving on the boat, while also having fun. To the committee members who dedicate their personal time to ensuring that we have beautiful reels, fun socials and much, much more. To the experienced paddlers who motivate us to keep paddling, no matter how much we think that we can’t keep going. And to the eager newbies who (un)intentionally splash us on the boat, and remind us all that at the end of the day, this is a water sport.

I hope to see even more Pandas at training and at the exciting international in Malaysia this year!
